What is the 'Agroseguro' system?

Agroseguro is the management entity for the Spanish agricultural insurance system, established in 1978 to offer comprehensive and sustainable coverage for the agricultural sector. It has been recognized by the European Union, as the best model for protecting agriculture against climate-related risks. Additionally, Agroseguro manages agricultural insurance on behalf of the insurance companies that are part of its co-insurance pool.

Main Missions of Agroseguro:

  • Management of policies and comprehensive handling of claims, issuance, and premium collection
  • Conducting assessments, evaluations, and payment of compensations on behalf of co-insurers
  • Managing subsidies through a quota system shared among farmers, the Spanish State, and autonomous communities

Main characteristics

Key Features of Agroseguro:

  • A public-private model with subsidies from the State and the 17 autonomous communities (in Spanish: comunidades autónomas, abbreviated as CC.AA.)
  • Extensive risk coverage: agricultural production, livestock, forestry, and aquaculture
  • A co-insurance pool with 16 selected private insurance companies (Sept. 2024)
  • Multiple interventions by the ‘Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros‘ (CCS or Insurance Compensation Consortium) act mainly as a reinsurer of the system.
